Billy quotes a person who said “The gift of old age is remembrance” and I like the way he mentions that his last few years have brought the gift of observation and reflection. As you would imagine, this book contains a lot of Scripture quotes to be applied to living in retirement – we don’t retire from life! We can still bear fruit in old age as the Psalmist said. We need to plan for our ‘Golden’ years, for the practical aspects, such as making a will and discussing our affairs with our children. We can have influence on future generations by passing on our faith and teaching them to build on the sure foundation that is Jesus Christ. How often do we hear old people saying “All I can do is pray”? Billy’s reply is “God bless you for doing the most important thing”.
Billy may not be able to preach to crowds any more, but even from his chair, he is able to speak to individuals through this book. I would recommend it to all age groups as not everyone will reach old age before being called home, but we should all be prepared.
(I was given a complimentary copy of this book by Thomas Nelson, but this in no way influenced my review)

Review by Margaret Vaughan

God's Love Letters to You

God’s Love Letters to You by Dr Larry Crabb

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by Thomas Nelson but this in no way influences this review.

Subtitled a 40-Day Devotional Experience, this is a wonderful little book consisting of a ‘letter from God’ based on a verse from 40 different books of the Bible for each of 40 days. This is different from many other devotional books I have read, in that each page re-affirms God’s love, but also provides challenges to how we see Him and how He works out His purposes in our lives. God is not a vending machine ready to supply all our wants, but He wants us to align our thoughts and wills to His.

Before getting half way through this book (it is not one to be read right through quickly), I ordered Dr Crabb’s ’66 Love Letters’ on which this book is based, to get more nourishment from the Word, so impressed am I by this writing.

Listen to what God is saying, reflect on what you have heard, and pray about how you should react. To me that reflects what this book is all about. I f you get a copy, you will want one for your friends as well and like me will want to read 66 Love Letters. Deserves to be widely read!

Creative Mission

Creative Mission Rona Orme ****
BRF / 9781841018065 / paperback / 223pp / £8.99

Every church that has a children’s ministry needs creative ideas and this book is crammed full of suggestions for outreach into the community or for the church family. In fact, this would probably be most useful as a reference book, rather than something to read through.

I have read, enjoyed and been challenged by many of Billy Graham’s books over the years, so to have this collection of his sayings is a valuable addition to my Christian library. However, the first chapter of The Final Summit finds 74 year old David grieving over the loss of his wife and reminiscing about the past, not knowing what to do. Alone in his apartment, he voices aloud his thoughts and is confronted by the Archangel Gabriel who suddenly appears. Gabriel transports David to another time and place, where he meets up with famous people from the past and is given a question to answer with the help of five of these people in an allotted time, to save civilisation. As the story develops, the suspense builds with each wrong answer that is given and I feel sure that every reader will be looking for their own answer.

There are some interesting conversations between David and the people he encounters in this book, bringing out historical facts to merge into this fictitious account. The reader’s guide at the back asks more questions which may cause you to re-read each chapter in order to get the most out of the writing. There is more depth to this book than may first appear and a second reading would be helpful to gain further insight.

Review by Margaret Vaughan who was given a complimentary copy of this book by Thomas Nelson.

The Sacred Journey

The Sacred Journey by Charles Foster ***
Thomas Nelson

Although this is part of a series of books called “The Ancient Practices Series”, I have to admit that I have not read any of the other books, although I might find some of them useful for reflective periods. I requested this book from Thomas Nelson who supplied it as a complimentary copy for review purposes.

This is a book describing pilgrimages from the Christian point of view, which I expected, but also from other faith sources, which I found a little off-putting, nevertheless it has a lot to say about the subject from historical examples and the author’s own experiences. At the beginning of the study guide, is the Scripture, Jeremiah 6:16 which to my mind sums up the need for pilgrimage.

In Chapter 4 we are reminded of the God who walks – Jesus was always on the move – so true! In Chapter 6 we are asked are we looking for the God of our imagination or the real God? Do we go to Jerusalem expecting to see images of childhood Sunday School?

There are challenges throughout and one of the things I have learned, is to try and enjoy the journey instead of rushing from A to B. Geisler ***
Bethany House / 9780764208126 / paperback / 125pp / £9.99

This book is dedicated to answering the age old question “If God exists, then why is there so much evil in the world?” Those who have difficulty in believing in a loving God, will hopefully find answers to their questions within these pages, although I found it a difficult book to get into. The first chapter deals with three views on evil, following which we have sections covering the nature, the origin, the persistence and the purpose of evil. The author goes on to discuss miracles, hell and the problem of those who have not heard the gospel. There are three appendices to the book, the last one being a critique of The Shack which I found very interesting. Having read and enjoyed that work of fiction, I was aware that the writing wasn’t ‘sound’, but it was good to hear a theologian’s view on the book.

Review by Margaret Vaughan

The Compact Guide to Christian History

The Compact Guide to Christian History Stephen Backhouse ****
Lion / 9780745955063 / paperback / 208pp / £10.99

If like me, you have problems with long historical accounts, yet want to find out more about our Christian heritage, this is the book for you! It is short, beautifully illustrated (as we have come to expect from Lion reference books), and very informative. Following the introduction, the main chapters are divided into centuries, easy reference points for looking up a particular era, with text boxes on each page highlighting people, places, or events. At the back of the book is a list of suggested reading, should you wish to explore further, also a glossary and an index. Once you have read this book, you will want to keep it on your shelf for future reference, but it would also make a useful present for the new believer wanting to explore how Christianity has developed over the years.

Review by Margaret Vaughan

Let the Walls Come Down

Let the walls Come Down by Vivian Jenkins
Tate Publishing / 9781615668014 / £8.50 + £1.50 p&p (available from the author)

This is one of those novels that instantly draw you into the story, one that you won’t want to put down. It begins with some traumatic events from Bethany’s earlier years, which explain why she has built the walls of protection around herself, but also introduces the people, who with God’s help, have the means to demolish the wall. The book is based on the Scripture: Isaiah 61:1-3 and takes place in England and Zimbabwe. It is a love story, a love that develops over time, with much prayer and wise counselling needed along the way. You will get a taste of the simplicity of life in Zimbabwe, but also the danger which can be experienced in that beautiful country. If you want a book to take away for holiday reading, look no further. I highly recommend it!

Who are the Christians in the Middle East

Who are the CHRISTIANS in the Middle East ***
Betty Jane Bailey & J Martin Bailey
Eerdmans / 9780802865953 / paperback / 227pp / £12.99

This is the 2nd edition of this book, the 1st having been published in 2003, since when there have been many changes, due to the constant political and religious upheaval in this area. If you are seeking to be inspired, this is definitely not the book for you, but if you want facts about the various branches of the church in the Middle East, read on. The one chapter that held my attention was ‘A Timeline of Christianity in the Middle East’, chronicling significant dates with events occurring from Pentecost to the present day. The authors state that the number of Christians is difficult to establish – doctrine is more important than numbers. Part 1 discusses the churches, part 2 the profiles (Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant) and part 3, the Church and the State, covering specific regions with historical background, contemporary circumstances and interfaith activities. The Bible readings are included in the book although there are suggestions for further study, if group time allows, so to have a Bible would be useful. Each session includes an icebreaker, eye-opener, scene setter, questions, final thoughts and something not often seen in this type of study, opening and closing prayers. Maybe these written prayers could be read by those who feel shy of praying aloud, the quieter ones in the group. There are leaders’ notes at the back of the book and all in all this a great book to encourage Christians to grow in faith and understanding of the Holy Spirit’s working in our lives. The only down factor is the cost, which is a little high for a 6 week course, but maybe the beautifully illustrated layout will justify the expense.

Review by Margaret Vaughan

Long Time Coming

Long Time Coming by Vanessa Miller *****
Abingdon Press / 9781426707681 / paperback / 303pp / £9.99

I have read quite a lot of Christian fiction over the past year, mainly for review purposes, but this surely must be one of the best. Vanessa Miller is a new author to me, but having discovered her, I will be looking out for more of her work. This is a heartwarming story about two women from the opposite ends of the social spectrum who are drawn together by their individual needs. Deirdre is the head of the school where Jamal, son of Kenisha, is a pupil. Kenisha failed to collect Jamal from school one day and Deidre took him to her own home until his mum was able to pick him up. Kenisha is a young unmarried mum with three children, who has a dysfunctional background, and is trying her best to bring up her children in a better way. Deidre is happily married, but is struggling with her apparent inability to have the children she longs for. And so the story opens and unfolds with many heartbreaking moments along the way. But this was a positive step! Going back to the KJV of the Bible which I never understood as a child, and seeing the words of a great preacher commenting on the Scripture texts, made me think that perhaps we make too light of our Bible readings in the new, easier to understand versions which fill our shelves today. Perhaps we have lost the reverence we need as we study God’s Word. These readings are taken from Spurgeons’ sermons preached at London’s Metropolitan Tabernacle during the later years of his ministry. Each day has a main text, further suggested readings, a commentary by Spurgeon and a verse from a hymn. If you normally rush through your quiet time and have lost the feeling of being in the presence of an awesome God, then this is the book for you.

Review by Margaret Vaughan

The Reluctant Detective

The Reluctant Detective Martha Ockley ****
Monarch / 9781854249582 / paperback / 224pp / £8.99

This is a relaxing whodunit featuring an ex police officer turned clergywoman, Faith Morgan, who witnesses the death of a priest as he begins to celebrate communion in the village Church. Faith’s ex boyfriend, a detective inspector arrives to investigate the death which turns out to be murder. Faith is invited to look after the parish by the Bishop and gets involved with the murder inquiries alongside her ex – not an easy relationship! She also lodges with her sister, so we learn something of her family background. As in any good mystery, there are numerous suspects and I was kept guessing until the end.
I wouldn’t call this a Christian novel – it really belongs in the secular market, but nonetheless it makes for enjoyable reading and is the first of a series featuring Faith Morgan. A book to unwind with a the end of a busy day.

Review by Margaret Vaughan

A Painful Post Mortem

A Painful Post Mortem by Mel Menzies

Although described as a novel, this excellent book is based on a real life story and the author takes us into a family life torn apart by the sudden death of one of its young members. As if this wasn’t bad enough, the post mortem described the deceased young lady as a ‘known drug addict’. Her divorced parents are devastated by this because they believed that she had won the battle against her addiction since becoming pregnant with her own child now age fifteen months. The book deals with the various family relationships, the guilt, hurt and all the raw emotions resulting from this tragedy. The family have one purpose and that is to remove the status of ‘known drug addict’ from the death certificate. Anyone who has lost a child or maybe a sibling at a young age will be able to identify with the painful emotions found in this book. Highly recommended.

Once an Arafat Man

Once an Arafat Man by Tass Saada with Dean Merrill
Tyndale / 9781414334448 / paperback / 233pp / £9.99

A friend recommended this book to me and I must admit I was reluctant to read it. I found the title and cover uninspiring, not my type of book I thought. Wrong! This is the story of Tass Saada, an angry young man, a murderer, full of hatred, after being brought up as a refugee in Saudi Arabia. That’s how it begins and the first part of the book describes how his life was. Thankfully, it didn’t end there. With God, all things are possible, and part two of the story gives an illustration of how God can change a person so completely. Whilst living and working in America, Tass surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and the story progresses in a new direction. This book gave me much insight and understanding of the situation in the Middle East and the ongoing conflict there.

Jesus Calling

Jesus Calling Sarah Young *****
Thomas Nelson / 9781591451884 / hardback / 382pp / £9.99

From writing in her own journal for her own benefit, Sarah Young has written this book for the benefit of anyone who would like to read it. And benefit from these devotions you certainly will. There are references to several verses of Scripture for each day and the thoughts that Jesus has put into her heart, from these verses, written as if spoken by Jesus himself. This is a small, beautifully presented book which although dated for each day of the year, would make a lovely gift for any time because it doesn’t have to be read from the beginning. The author points out eleven core evangelical beliefs and goes on to examine different churches and their vision statements, both here and in the USA. There are statistics on where the majority of evangelicals are to be found, not in Europe or America, but in Korea, China and Africa. We learn about the Great Awakening of the eighteenth century, the Lausanne Covenant and on to the various ideas of what will take place when Jesus returns. Or for many people, it is the reality of life, living with the consequences of past mistakes. A love story, with hurts and heartaches affecting three generations, it centres on Jade, the main character, travelling on an emotional roller coaster, as she deals with the problems surrounding her life.

I was drawn into this novel from the first page. I liked the occasional humour, the pathos and the ease of discovering more about the characters – it didn’t become too complicated. I haven’t read the previous book in the series, but there was enough background information given to be aware of places and circumstances affecting the people in the story.

Knowing the Publisher, I was expecting this to be a more ‘Christian’ book, but there was little mention of God until the last chapters, however, as I considered this, perhaps our own lives are like this – we don’t draw close to God and call out to Him until we are ‘up against it’ and the problems overwhelm us. This is a moving story, well written, and I look forward to the next book .

I was given a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes by Thomas Nelson, but this no way affects my comments.

Margaret Vaughan

Low Cost High Price

Low Cost High Price Theresa Cumbers with Martin Down *****
Authentic / 9781860247989 / paperback / 166pp / £8.99

This is the story of how one magistrate realised that to fine people engaged in prostitution is pointless because the reason they go onto the streets in the first place is because they have no money. To impose fines, forces them back onto the streets to earn more money to pay their debts. The author gives a brief autobiography of her own background and goes on to relate how she became involved with street girls and with others formed the Magdalene Group to reach out and help them. And help is what they give! To hear accounts of why the girls have become involved in this trade is heartbreaking but with help and determination, lives can be changed and some are rescued and go on to lead different lifestyles. The pack consists of a brief pamphlet for the carer showing how to help, what to say, or perhaps more important, what not to say, and five copies of the booklet, The Path not Chosen, all enclosed in a plastic wallet which will fit neatly on your bookshelf or in your handbag. I would find it helpful to read the pamphlet afresh before visiting the bereaved person and offering this helpful booklet explaining the journey of grief. The author writes out of his own experience of helping those who grieve after losing loved ones and then goes on to give Biblical examples of Gods’ dealings with widows, beginning with the story of Ruth and His provision for both Ruth and Naomi. There then follows the story of the widow of Zarephath who was asked to give away a portion of what she considered her last meal. Even though she was not a believer at first, through the miraculous intervention of God’s provision of food for her and her son and later, the raising of her son from death, she came to trust the living God. We see how Jesus, whilst hanging on the cross, made provision for his mother and then there is advice to the church on how to treat widows and help for widows themselves. An excellent Biblical study on widowhood.

For Everyone Bible Study Guide - 2 Corinthians

For Everyone Bible Study Guides. 2 Corinthians. Tom Wright *****
SPCK / 9780281063567 / paperback / 64pp / £4.99

We begin this book with background information and how to get the most out of 2 Corinthians, followed by suggestions for both individual and group study.
For individual study we are advised to use a journal and there are basic guidelines for group study. Following the Bible studies there is a section for group leaders. For anyone wanting to get more out of their daily Bible readings, this book is excellent, but to take it even further into group study would be even better. So often we Christians get spoon fed by sermons, tapes, books etc. but this book encourages us to feed ourselves and hopefully grow stronger in the process. Excellent! I shall be looking for more in this series.

Your Money God's Way

Your Money God’s Way by Amie Streater *****
Thomas Nelson / 9781595552327 / paperback / 191pp / £10.99

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by Thomas Nelson for review purposes, but this has in no way influenced my comments.

This is a very timely book written during a period of global recession, where so many individuals are at crisis point financially. Although written for the American market specifically for Christians, there is a lot to be learned by people in the UK or indeed universally, from the wisdom in this book in how to handle money.
Amie has written about her own experience and relates the stories of many individuals who have found themselves in dire straits financially for various reasons.
This is a challenging but inspiring book and should benefit all who will put into practise the advice contained within. I am impressed with this lady’s ministry and the way she uses Scripture quotes and prayers throughout the book, and summing-up points and solution suggestions at the end of each chapter. This is not a quick fix for those in debt, but with God’s help and wisdom and some self discipline and tough love, we should all learn how to gain control over our finances.
An excellent book!

Outlive your life

Outlive your life by Max Lucado
Thomas Nelson / 9780849946684 / paperback / 212pp / £9.99

This is another wonderful inspirational book from the pen of Max Lucado. After 25 years of writing, he still refreshes the reader with his simple illustrations built on passages from the Bible. The stories may be simply told, but they reach deep into the heart and soul of the reader every time. But as this volume says, we are not meant just to read and enjoy these writings based on the book of Acts, but to act on them, to live out your faith, to make a difference to those around you. As one comment inside the front of the book says, “How to move from Bible studies to Bible doins”.
It is so easy to be moved by such a book, but we need to put into practice what we read and the discussion and action guide at the back will help us do this. But, if you think you are not in a position to do anything, because of your circumstances, simply by buying this book will make a difference to someone, because the author’s royalties are benefitting Christian mission work. Thank you Max for another brilliant book!
I was given a copy of this book by Thomas Nelson for review purposes, but this has not influenced my thoughts in any way.

Review by Margaret Vaughan

The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews
Thomas Nelson / 9781404187801 /

Imagine a butterfly flapping its wings, setting molecules of air in motion, moving more molecules of air until on the other side of the planet, a hurricane is started. This is the butterfly effect. But this book speaks of individuals whose actions have changed the world for the better and because you have been created as one of a kind, every thing you do matters. You too can make a difference.
The message of this book is inspiring and the layout and production are beautifully presented, making it an acceptable gift to encourage a friend, but I wonder if the cost can be justified for a publication that can be read in less than 30 minutes. An amazing book of faith in action as John Kirkby is led by God to start a mission which will help people to get out of seemingly impossible financial difficulties, onto the road of recovery from debt. The charity was started in 1996 and now has centres not just around the UK, but also in Australia and New Zealand.
During the early years, we read of the obstacles and difficulties encountered as John seeks to establish this work among such desperately needy people, offering his financial knowledge and advice to get them on the way to being debt free, whilst at the same time keeping the charity afloat. His diary entries record time and time again that there is not enough money to pay bills and wages, but as the story progresses and the charity expands, we see how God provides. There are now 110 CAP Centres nationwide helping more that 13,000 people every year. And more than 2000 people have made commitments to Christ through this ministry.
I recommend this book to all who would like to be inspired by how God works today, in and through those obedient to His call.

A Very Private Grave

A Very Private Grave. The book tries to bridge the gap between popular perception and scholarly judgement about the figure of Jesus. Dickson has put together various evidences and research carried out throughout history since the death and resurrection of Jesus. He has used non-Christian references as well as New Testament records to support the facts laid out in this book. Rather than saying we have proof in history, Dickson calls it ‘very high probability’. He points out that the Gospels vary in their content, written as they were by different people, but an interesting point is that in all four Gospels, women were present at the empty tomb and their testimony was believed even though women were not regarded as reliable witnesses in that culture. This book is for the student, or those seeking the facts about Christian history.

What in the World is going on?

What in the World is going on? by Dr. David Jeremiah
Thomas Nelson / 9780785231172 / paperback / 259pp / £11.99

Based on messages given to his church, the author was persuaded to put these teachings into book form, and here we have a very readable book on Bible prophecy and how it links to the happenings in today’s world. Dr Jeremiah has written ten chapters which will hopefully enable the reader slot together the pieces of the jigsaw to show us where we are in God’s timetable.
Beginning with the nation of Israel and its importance in today’s world, we go on to learn about the oil situation, modern Europe and ancient Rome, Islamic terrorism, the Rapture and where the USA fits into this. There follows chapters on the end time occurrences right up until the return of Jesus the King.
This is a very enlightening read, a wake-up call to Christians, and a book that could be passed on to unbelievers to warn them of what is ahead, also a book to be kept on your bookshelf as a useful reference to aid Bible study. Someone once said that we should read the Bible alongside our newspaper and I think we could add this book as well to be a valuable aid to our understanding the times in which we live.

Review by Margaret Vaughan who was given a complimentary copy of this book by Thomas Nelson.

With Hearts and Hymns and Voices

With Hearts and Hymns and Voices Pam Rhodes *****
Monarch / 9781854249753 / paperback / £8.99

Described as a novel, it is clear that much of this book is based on the BBC production of ‘Songs of Praise’. And all those who like myself, are fans of this programme, after reading this book will view the broadcasts in a different light. Written by Pam Rhodes, the book describes in diary form, the month leading up to and including the production of a Palm Sunday service from a village in Suffolk. It is very easy to get involved with the characters in the story and should you forget anyone, there is a ‘Who’s Who’ in the front of the book. (I wish all authors would do this!). Not only do we go behind the scenes of the television production with all its complexities, but we get a look into various relationships as they develop or fall apart. Well written and easy to read, I recommend this book.

Cast of Characters by Max Lucado

Cast of Characters by Max Lucado

The Characters in this book are people of the Bible, but also people like you and me, because each of us can identify with one or more of the people we read about. Each chapter begins with a Bible passage followed by Max’s unpacking of the words, reading between the lines, and introducing modern day illustrations to bring the stories to life. And before passing on to the next chapter, there are some questions to consider, thus reinforcing what you have just read.

Those who like me have read a lot of Max’s books, may feel a little disappointed to find that these chapters have been taken from his previous writings – that was my initial response – but these stories are well worth a second read! Stories of common people in the hands of an uncommon God, as the subtitle suggests. This morning, I read a chapter as part of my quiet time with the Lord, in fact this book could be used as a devotional.

I commend this book to you. They go their separate ways, Sam carrying on his career as a heart surgeon and Annie moving away to further her journalistic career. Every year for five years, Sam had invited Annie to their favourite restaurant on the date of their anniversary, but he sat there alone, waiting in vain.
The story reverts to the tragic happenings that led to their separation, sharing details of a close knit family who were all affected by the events. Through a series of coincidences (God incidences?) they are led back together, although the purpose for Annie’s return was to file divorce papers and clear out their home. It is a story of how God moves in the lives of various individuals and how He can soften hard hearts and rebuild relationships. We all suffer the grief of losing loved ones, but not many will experience the death of a spouse after only five years of marriage and with two children to bring up. Sharon tells of the loneliness and despair this brought. But she moves on with God’s help in prayer, fasting and the Word. Time and time again, we are led to the Scriptures for answers, mainly the King James Version, which if we are not familiar with, we need to slow down to ponder on the meaning. Sharon tells of the daily conflict which can either develop your character or destroy your soul. She talks about having purpose in life and of overcoming obstacles with God’s help. Towards the end of the book, for readers who are not Christians, there is a prayer of commitment. And in the appendix at the end, there are personal reflections taken from her journals over the years. A book to give to someone who is struggling with life, for whatever reason.

Review by Margaret Vaughan

Inner Wellies

Inner Wellies – Creative Space for Soul Searchers Jane Upchurch ****
CEP / 9781905893355 / paperback / 127pp / £7.99

An unusual book, spiral bound with a wrap around cover and reasonably priced – these are my first impressions of this work of poetry and prose. Placed on your coffee table, the title and cover will intrigue your visitors and invite them to look inside at Jane’s reflections on life and spirituality. Each section begins with a black and white photograph of nature, reminding us of God’s creation. This intriguing find leads him to do much research on the internet, as to what they represented and how they came to be in the location of Orange Beach, Alabama on the north coast of the Gulf of Mexico. He visited elderly people in the area to ask them what they remembered about the war years, trying to piece together the information he received.
The result of his research is a fascinating and moving story of lives devastated by events during the Second World War and how love and forgiveness helped them overcome the tragedies.
For a while, I thought I was reading a work of fiction, an adventure that was too good to be true, but the ‘Where are they now’ section at the end of the book proved the reality of the narrative. My attention was held throughout; it is one of those books that you don’t want to put down. I was drawn into the story, feeling anger towards some characters and moved to tears by the love shown by others.
This book of ‘second chances’ deserves to be widely read and I would definitely recommend it!

Review by Margaret Vaughan who was provided with a complimentary copy of this book.

Embrace Me

Embrace Me by Lisa Samson *****
Thomas Nelson / 9781595542106 / paperback / 307pp / £9.99

I seem to be reading a lot of Christian fiction these days and most of the books are easy, relaxing reading, however, this one was so different. To begin with it was difficult to get into and required a lot of concentration to keep up with the various characters. I persevered, even though I felt I was always one step behind the events. Perseverance paid off! Towards the end of the book, things began to fall into place and as the stories behind the main characters fell into place, I was deeply moved by the past hurts experienced and present forgiveness offered. Above all, the difference between ‘religion’ and true Christianity shines through these writings. Great book!

Walking on Broken Glass

Walking on Broken Glass by Christa Allan
Abingdon Press / 9781426702273 / paperback / 342pp / £8.99

This novel delves into the life of a young middle class American lady who has a dependency on alcohol and after being confronted by her best friend, decides to do something about it. We usually thing of alcoholics being unable to admit they have a problem, but in this case, the husband tries to prevent her going into rehab. We learn about life in rehab, group therapy, one to one therapy and the underlying reasons for the problems in the first place. After a month in the clinic, it’s time to face the outside and the temptations the world offers. It is also time to face up the challenges of relationships without resorting to the bottle, which can’t be easy when socialising involves eating out in posh restaurants where bottles of wine are considered part of the meal.
I wouldn’t call this an overtly Christian novel, although God does make some appearances, so if you know any non Christians who suffer from addiction, this might be a good book to pass on. We first come across it in Chapter two and are reminded in the epilogue.
We are taken through a series of Heart Practices in the first section and then we go onto Practising Life. Some points that stand out in this excellent book are:-
Surrendering is not a one-off event, but a life of daily self denial.
Forgiveness: “God carried me through. He didn’t indulge me; the words from Scripture on forgiveness were not adapted for my situation”. Very wise words!
The Ebenezer Box to collect items to be thankful for as a reminder for thanksgiving.
Then we go onto the desert experience, connecting with God. From there we go into the community, getting involved with people, helping where we can. I liked the phrase ‘the person of peace’, meaning we witness to the person who welcomes us not to those who are antagonistic.
This is how to get a life beyond the quiet time!

A Hope for Hannah

A Hope for Hannah Jerry S Eicher *****
Harvest House / 9780736930444 / paperback / 288pp / £7.99

This is the second book in the Hannah series and begins with the newly wedded Hannah and her husband beginning married life in a log cabin in the mountains of Montana. This may sound idyllic until you read about cold winters, deep snow, grizzly bears, no electricity, horse and buggy for transport, etc. etc. But the story gripped me from the beginning. I was fascinated by the way the Amish choose their ministers and how church discipline takes place. It is easy to see why young people would want to leave the community and be a part of the outside world with modern conveniences. But there is also insight into young people wanting spiritual freedom found in other denominations. This is not just a good read, but I felt I learned a lot more about the Amish way of life, through the Author’s own experience.

A Dream for Hannah

A Dream for Hannah Jerry Eicher ***
Harvest House / 9780736930451 / paperback / 288pp / £7.99

Hannah is the 17 yr old central figure in this novel about life in the Amish community and her dream is to find the right man to spend the rest of her life with. Should she settle for the young man in the community who will inherit the family farm and give her a lifetime of security, or look for romantic love?
The story has several twists, but one is aware of the support and faith of the family in these communities. The Gospel is explained in a natural way during one of the church gatherings, as is baptism in a later service, which makes it a novel suitable to give to a non Christian. So often in Christian fiction, the gospel is added in as a stilted piece of information, but not in this case.
This is an ideal book to take on holiday, one to relax with, to enjoy.

No More Christian Nice Girl

No More Christian Nice Girl Paul Coughlin & Jennifer D Degler, phD ***

Bethany House / 9780764207693 / paperback / 182 pp / £9.99

This is an interesting book written by an International speaker (and former Christian Nice Guy) and a psychologist and life coach. If being ‘nice’ means being kind, caring and compassionate, that’s great, but many women are ‘nice’ because they fear conflict and rejection. So this is the challenge! The first chapter looks at the life of Jesus – was He nice? When he overturned the tables in the temple? Sent a herd of pigs to their death? The book then goes on to explore the differences between male and female brains, how childhood experiences shape what we are now, ‘nice’ versus ‘good’ with examples of Biblical women doing the right things fearlessly. There are chapters on friendship and family, how being nice can wreck relationships and even careers. The final chapter deals with the journey from Christian Nice Girl to God’s Good woman. Throughout the book, there are examples of how to react rightly rather than nicely in situations, and study questions at the end of each chapter. There is a long appendix at the end looking at the ‘not so nice’ Jesus in the gospels. Much food for thought here!

Live Like You Mean It

Live Like You Mean It by Eric Delve
Hodder & Stoughton / 9780340995037 / paperback / 238pp / £11.99

Starting from the points ‘You are unique’ and ‘You are unrepeatable’, Eric Delve invites you to discover the life you were made for and to live this life like you mean it. Delve uses illustrations from the life of David throughout, and we see that although he was chosen by God from a young age, he didn’t always get it right. We won’t always get it right either, so be encouraged!
Be an obedient, hard working servant of God. This is one-such book, written with such honesty, by a young man in church leadership who admits to not knowing all the answers when he started out, but was prepared to stand alongside people in their needs. Plan B is about when things don’t go according to the way we think they should, when our plans are disrupted.
Maybe it’s because I am getting older, but I am often amazed by the maturity and wisdom of some of the young Christian pastors in our midst today, Pete Wilson being one of them. This author tells of so many people who have been knocked off course by their circumstances but have found help and healing through submitting to God and allowing His church to love and help them in their troubles.
This is not a “happy ever after” book, because we live in a real world with real problems and often don’t get the answers we would like, but the author points us to the cross of Jesus (Good Friday) and sometimes we find ourselves living in the darkness of Easter Saturday, unaware of resurrection Sunday. This teaches us to wait on God and trust Him in the midst of difficulty.
Encouragement for dark times – highly recommended.

Review by Margaret Vaughan who was provided with a complimentary copy of this book by Thomas Nelson

Thin Places

Thin Places by Mary E DeMuth *****
Zondervan / 9780310284185 / paperback / 219pp / £9.99

What a moving account this is, so real, so intimate, so open and so heartwrenching! This has to be the result of asking Jesus to come with his healing touch into each painful episode of her past and being blessed with a wonderfully understanding husband.
This book deserves to be widely read and will give the reader a desire to explore some of the works of fiction by the author.

Walk like you have somewhere to go

Walk Like You Have Somewhere to Go by Lucille O’Neal
Thomas Nelson / 9781595553072 / Hardback / 225 pp / £14.99

This is the autobiography of the author, and as I come from ‘across the pond’ so to speak, this is the first time I have heard of her, although to the USA resident, she is probably well known if only through her famous son. The book summarizes her life from early childhood to the present day. And what a challenging life she has had!
Reading this book is a bit like meeting someone for the first time. You listen to what they are saying but the information is a little jumbled. You want to ask questions, but usually find they are answered later. I found myself going back over the first few chapters in case I missed something, but as I got further into the book, things sort of fell into place.
Lucille had a very difficult childhood, separated from her mother during her early years and brought up by legalistic Christian grandparents, although her father was on the scene as were extended family. Her mother did become part of her life again, but it wasn’t until she died, that Lucille found her need for Jesus again. It seemed strange that she abandoned her faith for so many years, yet each chapter is headed by a Bible verse.
She did her best in raising her four children together with her husband, despite having an alcohol problem, but I felt saddened, that after becoming a committed Christian, she chose to divorce her husband and live for herself, fulfilling her own dreams of college education. The redeeming factor is that she is now helping others to avoid the mistakes she made.

Thomas Nelson provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for review by me, Margaret Vaughan

Stepping into the Shadows

Stepping into the Shadows: Why Women Convert to Islam ****
Rosemary Sookhdeo. Isaac Publishing/ 9780954783570 / paperback / 125pp / £6.99

On the surface, it is difficult to understand why women in general would convert to Islam but surprisingly, this book is talking predominately about Christian women who are taking that step. The first chapter gives a detailed account of a Christian girl who met a Muslim whilst on holiday in North Africa, fell in love and got married. She kept her faith and the marriage eventually ended, but this gives an insight into many problems. Some of the reasons given include romance with a Muslim man needing a British visa, friendships made at university developing into deeper relationships, women from unhappy family backgrounds finding themselves welcomed into close knit communities.
Some believe that husbands will convert to Christianity. Some are converted through conviction that this is the way to God. A lot of women are blinded by any warning signs because they are so madly in love that they are determined to go ahead with marriage/conversion. There is a useful section at the end of the book showing the differences between Christianity and Islam.

Discipline with Care

Discipline with Care: Applying Biblical correction in your Church ***** Stephen McQuoid. DayOne / 9781846251528 / paperback / 95pp / £5.00

I recently attended a Bible convention where the speaker was Stephen McQuoid. Some of the studies were focussed on church leadership and on returning home I shared the CDs of the talks with our home group leader who also happens to be an elder at our church. He was impressed by the talks and is at present sharing them with the other elders.
Meanwhile I discovered this book by McQuoid on church discipline and before passing it on, decided to read the contents. This really is an excellent little book, not only for leaders but also for the congregation, to help them understand the reasons and practicalities of church discipline. There are real life examples helping the reader to realise the need of correction, both for the individual and the body as a whole. This would be a useful text book for every Christian as well as their leader.

In the Care of the Good Shepherd

In the care of the Good Shepherd : Meditations on Psalm 23 *****
Iain D Campbell
DayOne / 9781846251757 / paperback / 105pp / £5.00

This book is one of a series of Reflections published by DayOne and to my mind it is certainly a good introduction. The attractive cover draws you into the book which is described by a reader as suitable for the heart as well as the mind. The book began as a series of sermons on Psalm 23 and each chapter is an exposition of a verse. I am so glad to have the written version because this is something I can go back to time and time again.
There are some wonderful insights in this book. Campbell mentions how the psalmist goes from talking about God to talking to Him, hence the title of the first chapter ‘Knowing the Shepherd personally’. Later on we are reminded that we are not walking in the valley, but walking through it. I like the point that when your cup overflows, make sure it flows into someone else’s cup.
The Psalm is about movement – lying down, rising up, travelling, being led, walking and ultimately dwelling. A great little book, one which can be returned to time and time again.

Looking Anxiety in the Face

Looking Anxiety in the Face by Herbert Brokering ***
Augsburg Books / 9780806670591 / paperback / 98pp / £8.99

This would be a helpful book to those who are suffering from anxiety, whether real or imagined. The author seems to have suffered more than his fair share of wrestling with this condition and throughout the book, offers help in the different experiences of life which cause worry. The book need not be read through in one sitting, although probably could be due its short length, but each chapter is centred round a specific topic with helpful suggestions to deal with the problem.
Inside each chapter is some poetry, discussion about the anxiety, a verse from a hymn or some Scripture and at the end, an idea to practice.
When I began the book, I thought I wasn’t an anxious person, but found examples of situations where I could indeed identify with the author. A useful little book which could be given to someone in need, but the advice inside would need to be acted upon, if it is to be helpful.

Your Spiritual IQ

Your Spiritual IQ by John S Savage ***
Abingdon Press / 9781426702198 / paperback / 144pp / £10.99

This book is subtitled, ‘Five Steps to Spiritual Growth’ and as this suggests, this is not a quick fix to become a deeply spiritual person – growth takes time.
The first step is to know your own story so that you can witness to others about your faith – this is how Christianity is spread from one to another and down the generations.
Step two is to pray deeply – have dialogue with God – listening as well as speaking.
Step three is to simplify your desires.
Step four is facing your challenges – spiritual desert time.
Step five. Expand your understanding – your mission – your passion for living.
For review purposes, I read through this book fairly quickly, but in order to benefit and grow, it needs to be read slowly, with a break between each chapter to take on board the teaching within. At the end of the book, there is a personal spiritual development plan – a page for each chapter to fill in on your journey through each stage.
My impression is that you need plenty of time and space for this book to be meaningful, something a lot of people don’t have, but yearn for. A book to use on a retreat, read it but also apply it.

Free Book by Brian Tome

Free Book by Brian Tome ***
Thomas Nelson / 9780849920066 / paperback / 230pp / £9.99

(This book was provided by Thomas Nelson as a complimentary copy for review purposes.)

The first thing to know about this book is that it is not free! It is about freedom and how to obtain it. As 2 Corinthians 3:17 says ‘Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom’. So this is the basis to build on.
My first reaction to the point that motorcyclists should be free to not wear crash helmets is irresponsible, but maybe that’s because in the UK, helmets are compulsory. I still think it’s a good idea to wear them, compulsory or not!
The chapter on forgiveness is excellent. Stop rehearsing what people have done to you – forgive them and pray for them – you know it makes sense.
I learned from the chapters on strongholds – how we build up barriers because we are fearful. The illustration in the chapter on ‘evicting the squatters’ was most illuminating. Spiritual abuse was touched upon, which I am sure many have experienced and then the chapter entitled ‘Blahs, Break, Blues and Blessings’ based on Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt. Brilliant! We then have chapters on living out our freedom in God, in personal relationships, in community, in submission to authority (yes, there is freedom in this). On the whole, an excellent book, forget the ‘what if’s’ and live!

The Return

The Return - Grace and the Prodigal by J John with Chris Walley ****
Hodder & Stoughton / 9780340995143 / Hardback / 197pp / £10.99

This book is based on the Bible parable of the Prodigal Son and gives an excellent insight into the story. Divided into three parts, the first part is a modern dramatization of the story which points out that far more people are involved than the father and two sons. Part two is a detailed examination of the parable which is found in Luke’s Gospel. Beginning with the background and the origins, there follows a section about parables, the way they reach into the heart of the listener. They are not confrontational as a direct word would be. ‘A parable is a message with clothes on’.
Part three speaks about handling relationships in the light of the parable and asks questions about whether we can identify with any of the characters or how we would deal with the issues. Finally, there are personal accounts of those who recognise themselves as one or other of the characters in the parable.
An excellent book for personal use or could well be used in a group setting.

The Quest for True Tolerance

The Quest for True Tolerance by Stephen McQuoid / Day One / 9781846250811 / paperback / 166pp / £8.00

To my mind this was not an easy read, but then the subject of tolerance is not easy.
Stephen takes us into the realms of science and faith, other religions and Christianity, morals and ethics. As always I took some books to read, but I managed to read only one. This was the autobiography of Kenneth Taylor, the translator and publisher of the Living Bible. This book is now out of print but was a very interesting insight into the life and struggles of this man who went to be with the Lord five years ago. Anyone who uses a copy of this Bible would find this account fascinating. I myself use the New Living Translation (among others) and at our home group it is interesting to compare the text with a friend who still uses The Living Bible. Very similar.

The Prayers of Agnes Sparrow Joyce Magnin ****
Abingdon Press / 9781426701641 / paperback / 398pp / £8.99

This is an unusual novel in that one is almost forced to dislike the main character, Agnes Sparrow. She is immensely overweight and is pandered to by her sister and most of the neighbourhood who feed her with sweets and cakes, making her more so. She sweats and smells and can hardly move, except from her bed to a chair and to the bathroom with great difficulty. But, in spite of all this, people come to her for prayer and find that God answers these prayers in most cases. Because of this, the townspeople want to make a welcome sign to her town, commemorating her name. Agnes and her sister are against this, rightly saying that God should be given the glory, not Agnes.

This sets the background for the book set in a small American town, where life goes on at a slow pace, until a murder takes place, which turns everything upside down!

I feel a little sorry for Griselda, the longsuffering sister who is at Agnes’s beck and call, except when she is at work in the Library, but can’t help feeling that she could have helped Agnes more by putting her on a healthy diet!

The story shows how easily people can be put on pedestals and how quickly they can be knocked down again. And how when something goes wrong, someone other than the perpetrator of the crime has to share the blame.

There is a vein of humour running through this novel which comes to the fore in the end pages. I loved it! Looking forward to the next one.

One Imperfect Christmas Myra Johnson *****
Abingdon Press / 9781426700705 / paperback / 274pp / £8.99

The title and cover of this book tends to restrict the interest to the Christmas season only, which is a shame because having just read it in February, I can recommend it as a good read any time. As a debut novel, it is an excellent book, which focuses on Natalie, the central character and her relationships with her family and friends. Her life falls to pieces after her mother suffers a stroke just after Christmas and the book traces her journey through the year as she copes (or almost doesn’t cope) with guilt, withdrawal from family members, immersing herself in work to escape reality, etc. etc.
Although I tend not to read fiction very often, I am usually pleasantly surprised by Christian novels and this is no exception. This would make an ideal Christmas gift (because of the cover) so I hope it will still be available in the latter part of this year. I read it straight through despite the advice not to, and perhaps it would be better to delve into certain sections, however for review purposes, I ploughed through it in order. There were a few funny foolish moments such as the Bishop who thought he was leaving a house but walked into the broom cupboard and another Bishop who visited a school in full regalia and overheard a child ask why he was wearing a party hat. These items were light relief in the midst of a more serious adventure in faith. The book finishes with the statement that Jesus is the greatest Fool of all time! This is indeed food for thought and maybe a subject for a Bible study or two. If you like the contemplative writing style, this book is for you and as it says in the tips in the front “Look for questions rather than answers”.

TWO AT A TIME!

Thursday, December 10, 2009
Two at a time!

I knew it! There are lessons to be learned from each story and these are summed up in comments from the author at the end of each chapter. A book for bedtime to read as little or as much as you want, or a book to take on holiday to relax, or just to put on the coffee table and pick up to share with friends, above all let it minister to those situations where you find it hard to love, let God’s love transform those difficult areas of your life into places of joy. It may take time, but reading this book will show you how to begin. Highly recommended!

ONE AT A TIME

If you are a bookworm like me, you will probably have a shelf (shelves even) of books waiting to be read. So where to start? The temptation is to always read the newest addition and leave the older ones to gather dust! My latest acquisition was The Magnificent Obsession by Anne Graham Lotz. Knowing God has become the magnificent obsession of her life that grows and intensifies with each passing moment and she wants to share that with her readers. She certainly does that with her study of the life of Abraham. As she puts it......"Abraham walked off the pages and into my life"...... Isn't this how we all would like our Bible studies to be? Wonderful! Then I looked on my shelf and picked up Storm Warning by Billy Graham (Anne's father). This was written in 1992, but is every bit as relevant now as then - as Billy says "the Bible is a book for today". As I read, I feel I am with the apostle John on the Island of Patmos, listening to what God is saying to the churches (and to me personally)!

To be continued......
